Land Use & Density Control

SUMMARY: Provides that before the City may adopt any new comprehensive land use plan or any amendment thereto, such proposal shall be subject to vote of the electors of the City by referendum, following preparation by the local planning agency, consideration by the City Commission and notice

Why Is This Needed?

In the pursuit of new property tax revenues and to satisfy major campaign contributors, city management and elected officials have made poor choices regarding planning, growth, density and redevelopment, through recent years.

Changes in Daytona’s Land Development Code have resulted in our city now being ‘zoned’ for over 250,000 more ‘front doors’ or almost 500,000 more people! Our infrastructure and water supply can barely sustain the current population of 64,000. Our children will have to deal with raising the hundreds of millions of dollars necessary to repair and expand Daytona’s infrastructure if we allow this irresponsible growth to continue. This amendment allows all Daytona Beach residents a true voice in planning, density growth and redevelopment of their community, by placing any change of the Land Development Code on the ballot for a referendum vote. City management and developers will then have to educate the voter on the merits of each project, land swap or density growth issue before any changes to the Land Development Code can occur.
